The 31C Heatwave Threat to Your Kitchen
As summer temperatures prepare to hit a scorching 31C by Friday, households across the UK face an unexpected financial threat in their own kitchens.
The sweltering conditions can severely impact major appliances, leading to spoiled food and surging energy bills if preventative measures aren’t taken.

Appliance manufacturer Beko warns that older fridge and freezer units are particularly vulnerable to the heat. Over time, the rubber seals around the doors degrade, allowing chilled air to escape.
When warm summer air enters the unit, the internal cooling system is forced into overdrive to maintain safe temperatures for groceries.
The True Cost of a Failing Seal
A compromised door seal does more than just drive up household electricity usage.
In the freezer compartment, warm air intrusion creates excessive ice buildup. This ice acts as an insulator, making the compressor work even harder while significantly reducing the overall lifespan of the appliance.

“A worn-out door seal can prevent the refrigerator door from closing properly, causing the cooling system to work harder to keep your groceries fresh,” a Beko spokesperson explained.
“Warm air entering your fridge can overwhelm the cooling system, especially during hot summer days.”
The 1p Paper Test
You can easily verify the integrity of your fridge and freezer seals using a single sheet of standard A4 paper.
Salah Sun, Head of Product Management at Beko UK, recommends performing this simple diagnostic check before the worst of the heat arrives.
“Place the paper against the door seal and close the door. When you try to pull the paper out, you should feel some resistance,” Sun said.
If the paper slides out easily without grabbing, the seal is failing and likely needs immediate replacement to protect your food.
High Pressure Dominates the Forecast
The urgency for appliance maintenance stems from a prolonged spell of intense heat mapped out by the Met Office.
Temperatures in London will peak at 31C on Friday. While the heat will dip slightly to a steady 26C over the weekend, thermometers are expected to rebound to 28C by Monday and Tuesday.
High pressure is expected to dominate most of the UK, bringing dry weather and clear skies for the foreseeable future.
According to the Met Office, any scattered showers will be largely confined to the far south-west, while overall temperatures across the south will remain well above normal.
