The True Danger: Weight, Not Electricity
For decades, people have used fridge doors as family notice boards. They hold reminders, bills, and business cards for local delivery services.
As this habit grew, so did the rumors of electrical interference. Appliance giant Bosch tackled the issue head-on, noting that the real threat to your fridge is physical.

A massive collection of heavy magnets can physically weigh down the appliance door. Over time, this excess weight strains the hinges, potentially shortening the refrigerator’s structural lifespan.
“If you use just a few magnets on the fridge door, we don’t expect the appliance to malfunction, though scratches may appear,” Bosch representatives explained. “If you place so many magnets on the door that their weight increases enormously, it can reduce the lifespan of the door hinges.”
Zero Impact on Your Power Bill
The energy company Endesa completely dismissed the energy consumption myth. They clarified that the magnetic fields generated by everyday fridge magnets are far too weak to penetrate the appliance doors or disrupt internal sensors.
The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) backed this up. While electrical currents do interact with magnetic fields in physics, standard household magnets lack the strength to alter a refrigerator’s power draw.
LG offered a final, definitive statement on the matter.
“In fact, it’s just a myth: refrigerator magnets have no effect on consumption, lifespan, or food,” LG stated. “Magnets located on the outside of the refrigerator do not affect the operation or internal cooling capacity of the appliance.”

Removing magnets won’t lower your power bill, but reducing refrigerator energy consumption remains entirely possible.
Experts emphasize that keeping your fridge clean and avoiding structural damage to the hinges are the real keys to efficiency. A sagging door compromises the internal cooling seal, forcing the compressor to work harder.
