Why Your Lawn Equipment Is Secretly Destroying Your Grass (And How Experts Fix It)

Most homeowners blame weather or poor soil for a dying lawn, but the real culprit is often sitting in the garage. Neglected lawn and garden tools do more than perform poorly—they actively damage grass.

Improperly maintained equipment causes severe turf scalping and introduces devastating fungal diseases to healthy yards. Protecting your landscape requires regular mechanical upkeep before the blades ever touch the grass.

Sharpen Blades to Prevent Fungal Infections

Every time you mow, you are inflicting millions of tiny wounds on your turf. How quickly the grass heals dictates its survival.

“Cutting the grass with dull blades tears the plant tissue instead of slicing it,” says plant pro Wes Bollingmo. Ragged, torn grass blades take significantly longer to heal, giving fungal spores an open window to invade the plant.

Inspect your mower blade for a distinct, sharp edge before starting the engine. Experts recommend sharpening blades twice per season. Secure the blade in a vise and use a metal file to restore the edge, replacing the metal entirely if you spot bends or cracks.

Always prioritize safety. Disconnect the spark plug wire on gas-powered mowers or remove the battery on electric models before removing the blade.

Scrape the Cutting Chamber for Proper Mulching

A mulching mower works by trapping grass inside the cutting chamber, slicing it repeatedly until the clippings are fine enough to fall back into the soil as natural fertilizer.

“Keep the underside of the mower deck clean so grass can circulate properly for an even cut and effective mulching,” says landscape contractor Sara Bendrick Torres. Over time, layers of wet, compressed grass build up like concrete under the deck, destroying this circulation.

Scrape out this debris with a putty knife. To prevent future sticking, spray WD-40 onto a clean cutting chamber to help wet clippings slide right off.

Maintain Engine Power to Avoid Scalping

A struggling engine does more than stall—it ruins your lawn’s surface. When dirty oil or clogged air filters cause an engine to sputter in tall grass, the mower blade slows down, resulting in a jagged, uneven cut.

This drop in power often leads to scalping, where the mower cuts too low and damages the turf crown. Scalping severely reduces the blade surface area, starving the grass of the photosynthesis it needs to survive summer heat.

“Keeping your equipment in good working condition not only improves the appearance of your lawn but also promotes stronger, healthier growth throughout the season,” Torres says. Check your oil levels and replace dirty air filters at the start of every season.

Check Tire Pressure for Level Mowing

Uneven tire pressure is a hidden cause of turf scalping, particularly for heavy riding mowers. If one pneumatic tire is softer than the others, the mower deck tilts, shaving sections of the grass down to the dirt.

While most basic push mowers use solid plastic wheels, pneumatic tires require vigilance. Use a standard tire gauge to check the pressure and inflate them to the exact PSI recommended in your owner’s manual.

Disinfect Pruners to Stop Plant Disease

Lawn care doesn’t stop at the grass. Failing to maintain handheld garden tools will quickly devastate your plants and shrubs.

Using dirty pruners on a diseased branch and immediately moving to a healthy shrub guarantees the infection will spread. Professional landscapers treat their tools like surgical instruments.

Protect your garden by mixing 1 part chlorine bleach with 9 parts water in a bucket. Dip your pruners into the solution between cuts, and wipe them completely dry before storing them to prevent rust.
