The Plumber’s Putty Trick for Drilling Perfect Holes in Glass

Drilling through glass usually ends in disaster for the uninitiated. One wrong move, and the pane shatters into hundreds of dangerous shards.

The culprit is rarely the drill itself. Instead, the intense heat and friction generated by the spinning bit cause the failure.

When localized friction builds, thermal shock forces the glass to expand rapidly at the drill site. Unable to flex, the material simply snaps.

The Essential Hardware

You cannot drill glass with standard wood or masonry bits. Attempting to do so will instantly destroy your material.

You need a diamond-coated hole saw bit. Unlike standard bits that cut by carving away material, diamond bits work by grinding the glass into a fine powder.

Alongside the diamond bit, gather a flat piece of scrap wood, standard masking tape, and the secret ingredient for this process: plumber’s putty.

The Putty Dam Trick

This simple technique separates professionals from frustrated DIYers. Since heat is the ultimate enemy of glass, you must introduce a continuous coolant.

Take a golf-ball-sized piece of plumber’s putty and roll it into a thin cylinder. Form this snake of putty into a tight ring directly around your target drilling zone.

Press the putty firmly against the glass to create a watertight seal. Next, fill this small makeshift dam with cold water.

As you drill, the bit will remain fully submerged. The water absorbs the friction-generated heat, completely eliminating the risk of thermal shock.

Prepping the Workstation

Glass must be fully supported before you pull the trigger. Place a flat piece of scrap wood directly underneath the glass.

If the glass flexes even a fraction of an inch under the weight of the drill, it will crack. The wood backing absorbs the pressure and keeps the pane rigid.

Place a square of masking tape on the underside of the glass, right where the bit will exit. This tape helps prevent the edges of the hole from chipping as the drill breaks through.

The 45-Degree Start

A diamond hole saw has no sharp center point to anchor it. If you plunge it straight down, it will skate across the wet glass and ruin the surface.

To establish a clean starting point, tilt your drill at a 45-degree angle. Start the drill at a very low speed.

Gently touch the edge of the spinning bit to the glass. Let it grind a small, crescent-shaped groove into the surface.

Once this groove is deep enough to catch your fingernail, slowly pivot the drill upward until it sits at a perfect 90-degree angle. The bit is now locked securely in its own track.

Managing Speed and Pressure

Patience is the only way to successfully cut through glass. Keep the drill’s RPM low and steady.

Apply almost zero downward pressure. You must let the weight of the drill do the heavy lifting while the diamond grit grinds away the surface.

Use a gentle pumping motion as you work. Lift the bit up a fraction of an inch every few seconds.

This pumping action allows the water from your putty dam to flow directly into the fresh cut. It flushes out the abrasive glass dust and ensures the cutting edge stays lubricated.

The Breakthrough Moment

Listen to the sound of the drill. As you reach the final fraction of the glass, the pitch of the grinding will change slightly.

The water in your putty dam may also begin to slowly seep through micro-fissures at the bottom of the cut.

This is your cue to back off the pressure entirely. If you push hard during this final stage, you will blow out the back of the glass, leaving a jagged, unsafe edge.

Let the bit spin freely against the remaining material until it drops cleanly through the bottom and into the scrap wood below.
