A Secret “Decluttering Bag” Strategy
After crashing at my sister’s apartment with my cat between leases last year, I decided to deep-clean her kitchen as a thank-you gesture. Moving out meant packing my own things, but it also presented the perfect opportunity to tackle the chaotic clutter hiding behind her cabinet doors.
To avoid any sibling drama over thrown-out items, I devised a simple strategy. I placed all the removed clutter into a hidden bag and told her she could have anything back if she requested it by its specific name.
She never asked for a single item. Here is exactly what I removed from her kitchen during the sweep.
Rusty Cutlery and Rogue Hardware
Her utensil drawer was a daily obstacle course. I constantly had to sift through the pile just to find a safe fork or spoon for meals. During the cleanout, I permanently removed the rusted pieces: two forks, two knives, and a rusty Mason jar lid.
The hardware situation was equally confusing. I pulled out two unmarked sandwich bags filled with stray screws and rubber pieces. I also found instructions for a knife holder that likely belonged to one of those mystery bags.
Topping off the random drawer debris was a brown paper bag holding exactly two AA batteries.
Misplaced Bathroom and Pet Supplies
Kitchen drawers should hold cooking tools, but my sister’s space served as a strange catch-all. I found an unused toothbrush shoved into a drawer. Assuming it might be used to brush her cats, I spared it from the trash and tossed it into the hidden bag.
I also unearthed a bottle of pet conditioner and a set of water filters. The filters belonged to her shower head, which she had temporarily removed earlier in the year. I bought some plumber’s tape, reinstalled the shower head for her, and finally put the filters back where they actually belonged.
The Chef Roommate’s Leftovers
My sister’s previous roommate was both a professional chef and a Pokémon enthusiast. Their legacy lived on in the kitchen cabinets.
The first casualty was a Pokémon “Happy Birthday” banner stuffed into a cupboard. Whether it had ever been used remained a mystery, but it went straight into the decluttering bag.
Next came a highly specific collection of culinary tools that had no business remaining in a standard home kitchen. This included two whetstone angle guides and an absurd stash of seven separate cake testers.
Unidentifiable Plastic and Oddities
The deeper I dug, the stranger the discoveries became. I found a piece of fabric housed with the Tupperware that took me a solid minute to identify as unused cheesecloth.
I also cleared out a drawer stuffed with excessive appliance manuals. Everyone saves instruction pamphlets thinking they will need them, but all six of these booklets were easily accessible on the internet. I tossed them into the bag alongside a stray coffee maker descaling packet.
The rest of the decluttered haul consisted of random junk taking up valuable real estate:
- A plastic hook
- A plastic carabiner meant for measuring cups
- A rubber nozzle
- A random tote bag (stored completely separate from her actual collection of reusable grocery bags)
- Two unidentified plastic gadgets, including one equipped with spiky metal parts
