The Psychology of a Soap Opera Mastermind

Marlene Favela is dominating television screens with her gripping portrayal of Dalila in El Renacer de Luna. Produced by Roy Rojas for Las Estrellas, the telenovela places the Durango-born actress in the shoes of a deeply flawed, calculating power player.

Rather than relying on tired tropes, Favela built Dalila from the ground up by examining her childhood trauma. Understanding the character’s early pain was essential to justifying her ruthless decisions throughout the series.

“Dalila is a woman who goes for everything and never betrays herself,” Favela stated. “That is what I think villains must have. Never betray the essence of their pain and their behavior.”

Weaponizing Romance on Screen

Dalila thrives on emotional warfare, utilizing her intelligence and agility to manipulate those around her. This dynamic is especially clear in her intense scenes with the male cast, including Mauricio Henao, Matías Novoa, and Alejandro de la Madrid.

She operates as a puppet master, steering her lover, her obsessive admirer, and her husband toward her own goals. Favela enjoys the complexity of playing a woman whose greatest weapon is emotional leverage.

A Drastic Blonde Reinvention

To further distance Dalila from the typical telenovela antagonist, Favela underwent a striking physical transformation. The actress traded the traditional dark hair of soap opera villains for a bold, bright blonde look.

“It’s my first time being this blonde, and I love it because I can be more of a chameleon,” Favela noted. The visual shift adds an extra layer of unpredictability to her already enigmatic character.

Acting Without a Safety Net

Behind the scenes, Favela’s discipline sets her apart from her peers. While the majority of telenovela actors rely on an earpiece (apuntador) for their lines, she memorizes her dialogue entirely.

El Renacer de Luna marks her third consecutive project using this rigorous method. Favela insists that shedding the technology allows her to surrender completely to the scene and maintain full control over her emotional delivery.

Approaching the Milestone of 50

Currently filming into the late summer, Favela is just a year away from celebrating her 50th birthday. Rather than fearing the milestone, she views her recent years as her ultimate golden era.

Becoming a mother to her daughter, Bella, at 42 catalyzed a massive shift in her life. “When Bella arrived, she transformed my universe in the most beautiful way. I brought out all the claws I had hidden since birth to achieve my pending dreams,” Favela said.

Beyond acting, she used her 40s to launch her own beauty and fashion lines, as well as a brand dedicated to her daughter. “I feel that I am mature in almost all aspects of my life,” she concluded, “but I feel that my 50s will arrive with a lot of brilliance, like a second wind.”
