Patrick Cantlay has abruptly pulled out of the Wyndham Championship.
PGA Tour Communications confirmed the withdrawal on Monday. The Tour did not provide an official reason for the exit.
Ben Silverman will take Cantlay’s vacant spot in the field at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.
The move caught fans and oddsmakers off guard. With eight Tour titles, a 2021 FedExCup championship, and more than $66 million in career earnings, Cantlay entered the week as a major betting favorite.
He was already positioned firmly inside the FedExCup’s top 50. That status made him an absolute lock for the BMW Championship and next year’s signature events, regardless of his absence in Greensboro.

Cantlay’s sudden withdrawal interrupts his strongest stretch of competitive golf in years.
He recently tied for seventh at the Valspar Championship and tied for eighth at the RBC Heritage. He then added a tie for 10th at the Truist Championship.
Last week at the Rocket Classic, Cantlay shared the 36-hole lead with Cameron Young and Patrick Fishburn after firing back-to-back rounds in the mid-60s.
Sunday proved to be a different story. Cantlay bogeyed the par-4 seventh hole and immediately played conservative off the tee on the drivable eighth.
Opting to lay up with an iron instead of attacking the green like most of the field, he made a routine par and ultimately closed with a tie for eighth.
The former FedExCup champion is still searching for a victory, having not hoisted a trophy since the 2022 BMW Championship.

Cantlay wasn’t the only shifting piece on the Wyndham Championship board this week. The PGA Tour finalized several late additions to the field.
Four players—Luke List, William McGirt, Keenan Huskey, and Lorenzo Rodriguez—punched their tickets through Monday’s open qualifier.
Blades Brown and Ben Kohles secured their spots based on their standing in the Tour’s priority ranking. Brown has spent his summer aggressively chasing status on both the PGA Tour and the Korn Ferry Tour since turning professional.
Camilo Villegas and Hayden Springer rounded out the final field via sponsor exemptions.
Villegas, the 2008 Tour Championship winner, remains a highly recognizable name at Sedgefield. Meanwhile, Springer looks to capitalize on the opportunity after bouncing between the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour for most of the season.
