John Leguizamo has voiced Sid the Sloth for over two decades. The role did more than just establish him as a beloved animated character; it built a foundation of generational wealth for his family.

A Highly Lucrative Franchise
The 66-year-old actor recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight about the massive financial impact of the Ice Age franchise. As he prepares for the February 2027 premiere of the sixth film, Ice Age: Boiling Point, he reflected on his animated payday.
“It paid my bills! It got me a second and a triple home. It paid for my kids’ college,” Leguizamo admitted with a laugh.
Beyond the impressive paycheck, the actor cherishes the creative freedom the films provide. He noted that live-action movies tend to be heavy and dramatic.
“I got to be hilarious,” he said. “I got to be so silly and create this incredible character and creature.”
The Origin of the Lisp
During the interview, the outlet played a clip of Leguizamo from 2002 explaining how he developed Sid’s signature voice.
He had originally asked for Discovery Channel footage to study sloth behavior. He recalled watching a sloth moving at a painfully slow pace for two solid hours.
The vocal breakthrough came when a narrator mentioned that sloths store food in their mouths. “That’s how I started to come up with this sort of lateral lisp, from all the food,” Leguizamo explained in the old footage.
Watching the flashback, Leguizamo noted that he frequently slips back into the character’s distinct voice, adding that he “can’t really let go of Sid the Sloth.”
What to Expect in ‘Boiling Point’
The animated franchise is continuing its massive run, following up on The Meltdown (2006), Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009), Continental Drift (2012), and Collision Course (2016).
A teaser for Ice Age: Boiling Point dropped in June 2026. According to Deadline, the film promises a “dinosaur-and-lava-filled madcap adventure.” Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, Scrat, and the herd will navigate uncharted areas of the treacherous Lost World.
The new installment features a star-studded returning cast, including Ray Romano, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary, and Simon Pegg.
Leguizamo also dropped a major casting hint for the upcoming sequel. “They’re reuniting the trio, bringing Queen Latifah abroad and I think J. Lo’s in it as well,” he teased.
