Bypassing Retail Markups
High-quality concrete planters carry steep price tags at local garden centers. They are heavy, weather-resistant, and built to last, which justifies the cost for many homeowners.
You can bypass this retail markup entirely by casting your own. Using a simple plastic utility basket as a concrete mold is a highly effective, low-cost way to create custom garden decor.
The flexibility of the plastic makes unmolding easy, while the textured sides of woven or slotted baskets leave intricate patterns on the finished concrete.
Gathering Your Materials
This project requires minimal investment and basic supplies found at any local hardware store. You need a plastic basket to serve as the outer mold.
You will also need a smaller plastic bucket to act as the inner mold, creating the cavity for the soil and plant. Pick up a standard bag of high-strength concrete mix or a finer sand-and-Portland-cement blend for a smoother finish.
Grab a can of non-stick cooking spray or mineral oil, a mixing tub, a trowel, heavy-duty work gloves, and a dust mask.
Prepping the Molds
Concrete will permanently bond to porous surfaces and can stick stubbornly to dry plastic. You must use a release agent to ensure the molds come off cleanly.
Coat the entire inside of the larger plastic basket and the outside of the smaller bucket with cooking spray or mineral oil. Do not leave any dry patches, especially in the textured grooves of the basket.
If your basket has wide slots, you can line the interior with thin plastic sheeting. Alternatively, leaving the slots exposed allows the concrete to bulge slightly, creating a highly textured, rustic exterior.
Mixing and Pouring
Put on your gloves and dust mask. Mix the concrete in a tub according to the manufacturer’s instructions, aiming for a consistency similar to thick oatmeal or peanut butter.
Pour a two-inch layer of concrete into the bottom of the large, oiled basket. This forms the solid base of your planter.
Press the smaller oiled bucket directly into the center of the wet concrete. Place heavy rocks or bricks inside this inner bucket so it does not float upward as you work.
Carefully scoop the remaining concrete into the gap between the two plastic containers, filling it all the way to the top edge.
Removing Trapped Air
Air bubbles trapped against the plastic will leave weak spots and ugly craters on your finished planter. You must vibrate the mold to force this air to the surface.
Tap the outside of the plastic basket repeatedly with a rubber mallet or a piece of scrap wood. Continue tapping for several minutes until you see bubbles stop rising to the top of the wet concrete.
Smooth the top edge of the concrete with a small trowel. This will become the visible rim of your finished flower pot.
Curing and the Final Reveal
Place the entire assembly in a dry, shaded area. Concrete relies on a chemical reaction to harden, and doing this away from direct sunlight prevents it from drying out too quickly and cracking.
Allow the concrete to cure for at least 48 hours. Patience is critical; removing the molds too early will cause the planter to crumble.
Once fully hardened, remove the weights and twist the inner bucket to pull it out. Then, gently flex the sides of the outer plastic basket to break the seal and slide the heavy concrete planter free.
If the plastic basket is completely rigid and refuses to let go, you can carefully cut it away with heavy-duty utility snips.
Flip the finished planter over and drill a drainage hole through the bottom using a masonry bit. Brush off any loose dust, and the heavy-duty, frost-proof pot is ready for potting soil.
