The Hidden Cost of Dull Tools

Most DIYers respond by throwing the bit in the trash and driving to the hardware store for a replacement. This is a massive waste of money and time.
Veteran tradesmen don’t throw away good steel. A skilled metalworker can restore a factory-sharp edge to a standard twist drill bit in under a minute.
The Veteran’s Secret to Perfect Geometry
Sharpening a drill bit seems complicated because of the complex geometry at the tip. The bit needs a specific point angle—typically 118 degrees for general purpose use—and a relief angle behind the cutting edge.
Many people assume you need expensive sharpening jigs to get this right. The reality is much simpler.
An experienced worker relies on muscle memory, a standard bench grinder, and a precise hand motion. Once you understand the mechanics, you can replicate this technique in your own garage.
What You Need Before Starting
Keep your setup minimal. You need a standard bench grinder equipped with a fine-grit aluminum oxide wheel.
Always wear safety glasses. Grinding metal produces high-velocity sparks and steel dust that can easily damage your eyes.
Keep a small cup of water next to the grinder. You will need to dip the bit frequently to prevent it from overheating and losing its temper.
Step 1: Find the 59-Degree Angle
Turn on the grinder and let it reach full speed. Stand squarely in front of the wheel.
Hold the drill bit horizontally against the tool rest. You want to present the cutting edge of the bit to the face of the grinding wheel at exactly 59 degrees.
Why 59 degrees? Because two sides cut at 59 degrees create the perfect 118-degree point angle required for standard drilling.
If you struggle to visualize 59 degrees, look at two standard hex nuts placed side by side. The angle where they meet is exactly 120 degrees—close enough to use as a highly accurate visual reference.
Step 2: The Grinding Motion
Bring the cutting lip of the drill bit straight into the grinding wheel. Keep your grip firm.
As soon as the lip touches the wheel, simultaneously push the shank of the bit slightly downward while twisting it clockwise.
This specific sweeping motion is the true secret of the trade. The upward twist of the tip lowers the heel of the drill bit, creating the essential clearance angle.
Without this clearance angle, the heel will rub against the material you are drilling, preventing the cutting lip from actually digging into the surface.
Step 3: Cool, Check, and Repeat
Grinding generates immense friction. If the tip of the bit turns blue, the steel has overheated and lost its structural hardness.
Grind for no more than two seconds at a time. Dip the tip into your cup of water immediately after each pass.
Rotate the bit 180 degrees and repeat the exact same motion on the other side. Consistency is critical here.
Both cutting lips must be the same length, and both must sit at the exact same angle. If they are uneven, the drill bit will wander off-center and drill an oversized, sloppy hole.
Testing the Restored Edge
Inspect your work under a bright light. The cutting edges should be sharp, and the heel behind each edge should slope downward away from the cutting lip.
To test it, press the bit into a piece of scrap wood or soft metal by hand. A properly sharpened bit will immediately bite into the material with just a slight twist.
Once you master this sixty-second technique, a dull bit is no longer a ruined tool. It is just a momentary pause in your workflow.
