The Staggering Budget Behind Homer’s Epic
Christopher Nolan is pulling out all the stops for his latest cinematic venture, The Odyssey. The ambitious adaptation of Homer’s ancient text is carrying a staggering price tag as it heads toward its opening weekend.
Production costs for the film hit $250 million, with an additional $125 million allocated for a global marketing campaign. This pushes the total budget for the R-rated epic to an eye-watering $375 million, or approximately ₹3614 crore.

Practical Sets and IMAX Lenses
True to his filmmaking style, Nolan relied heavily on 70 mm IMAX cameras and practical environments to capture the massive scale of the story.
Instead of relying on digital green screens, the crew traveled across the globe to film in real locations. Production took place in Greece, Morocco, Iceland, Scotland, the United States, and Italy, specifically spanning the island of Sicily.
According to the production team, only a single physical set was built from scratch. The crew exclusively constructed the kingdom of Ithaca to anchor the narrative.
Breaking Down the Star-Studded Salaries
Despite the film’s massive budget, the real financial spotlight lands on the expansive ensemble cast. Character guides for Nolan’s epic show a heavy-hitting roster of A-list talent.

Leading the charge is Matt Damon as Odysseus, King of Ithaca. Damon commanded the largest upfront actor salary, cashing a $15 million check.
Close behind is Tom Holland, portraying Odysseus’s son, Telemachus. Holland secured approximately $10 million for his role.
Charlize Theron, stepping into the role of Calypso, earned an estimated $5 million to $6 million. Meanwhile, Zendaya was paid roughly $5 million to portray Athena.
Anne Hathaway negotiated $4 million to $5 million to play Penelope, the resilient wife of Odysseus. The actor portraying Antinous—the arrogant suitor vying for Penelope’s hand and throne—took home between $1.5 million and $3.5 million.
The supporting cast also secured solid paydays. Benny Safdie earned $2 million, while Lupita Nyong’o received $1.5 million. Elliot Page, playing the brave Greek soldier and cousin Sinon, matched Nyong’o with a $1.5 million salary. Mia Goth rounds out the reported figures, earning between $1 million and $1.5 million.
The True Top Earner

It is practically an industry standard for Hollywood stars to slash their typical quotes just to work with Nolan.
During the production of Oppenheimer, heavyweights like Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. accepted base salaries of $4 million, far below their usual $10 million-plus rates. With Nolan’s history of massive box office grossers, backend deals usually make up the difference.
However, none of the actors come close to the director’s own compensation. Christopher Nolan secured a massive $20 million upfront payment to direct The Odyssey.
More importantly, his contract guarantees him an advance against 20% of the studio’s box office gross. Nolan walked away with nearly $100 million for Oppenheimer, and industry projections suggest The Odyssey will be even more lucrative for the acclaimed filmmaker.
