Robert Pattinson acting as Antinous in Christopher Nolan’s film The Odyssey

Robert Pattinson fully immersed himself in his role for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, but one of his specific creative choices didn’t make it to the final cut.
The 40-year-old actor plays the nefarious Antinous in the new three-hour cinematic epic. During a recent appearance on the Today show, Pattinson revealed he asked the wardrobe department to include “cheetah underpants” beneath his ancient Greek attire.

Pushing the Wardrobe Boundaries
“As soon as I read the script, I’m like, I want to have cheetah underpants, which you could see through [the outfit],” Pattinson explained with a laugh. He quickly noted that Nolan ultimately “drew the line there.”
When explaining the thought process behind the outlandish pitch, the actor pointed to his character’s inherent vanity and indulgence. “I was like, I think Antinous is that kind of guy,” he said. “He has this kind of sensuousness about him. It’s just like, I just like pleasure.”
This logic led Pattinson to suggest outfitting the Greek antagonist in the “most luxurious fur underpants” imaginable. Acknowledging the absurdity of his request, he added, “This sounds so ridiculous when you say it out loud. This is my job! It’s my job to have these thoughts.”

A ‘Sleazy’ Inspiration
Today correspondent Kaylee Hartung pointed out that Nolan notoriously expects his cast members to become absolute experts on their characters. Pattinson’s deep dive certainly proved he was willing to go the extra mile.
“Furry underpants,” Pattinson joked in agreement. “That’s The Odyssey.”
This isn’t the first time the actor has publicly discussed his strange wardrobe vision. In a June interview with GQ, Pattinson shared that his take on Antinous was heavily inspired by James Woods’ performance in the classic film Casino.
“I thought it’d be quite nice to see it in Ithaca. And he’s like a little sleazy,” he told the magazine. He recalled asking the costume team for “leopard underpants” with a bit of “sparkly fur” visible beneath his traditional skirt.
An All-Star Epic
While Pattinson’s big cat britches were sidelined by the director, his dedicated performance is currently playing in theaters.
Nolan’s The Odyssey features a massive ensemble cast. Pattinson stars alongside Matt Damon, Zendaya, Himesh Patel, Lupita Nyong’o, Tom Holland, Elliot Page, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, and Anne Hathaway.
