The Shift to Footwear Escapism
Fashion has always sold fantasy. While the industry once relied on head-to-toe theatricality—like the cinematic sets of a John Galliano-era Dior show—the modern route to escapism is much more compact.
Today, designers are proving that you do not need an extravagant wardrobe to transport an audience. A single, exceptionally unique shoe can do all the heavy lifting.
Chanel’s Storybook Approach
This shift was undeniable during the fall/winter 2026 couture collections. Matthieu Blazy brought a literal “Jack and the Beanstalk” theme to the Chanel presentation, grounding his light silk mousseline tweed skirts and little black dresses in pure whimsy.
Paired with mismatched necklaces, the footwear looked as if it were plucked directly from a fairy tale.

Dior’s Floral Architecture
At Dior, Jonathan Anderson anchored his couture vision in equally elaborate footwear. He sent pointed- and square-toe pumps down the runway, heavily decorated with tassels, metallic bows, and intricate embellishments.

Anderson leaned heavily into natural motifs for the fall/winter 2026 line. The heels themselves featured brightly colored flora, designed to look as though they were freshly gathered from the Jardin des Tuileries.
The Collector’s Market
These intricate designs cater to a specific luxury consumer. Moda Operandi’s vice president of non-apparel, Ryan Kleman, notes that footwear holds an entirely unique place in fashion retail.
“Shoes have a collectible element that doesn’t exist in most other fashion products,” Kleman explains. “It’s not uncommon to hear that someone has more shoes than days in the year.”
In fact, top clients frequently purchase these art-piece heels strictly for display, with zero intention of ever wearing them outside.
Upgrading the Basics
The concept of a statement shoe is a reliable styling trick, often used to elevate a basic white T-shirt and jeans. However, the current iteration on the runways is about complete world-building.

At Dries van Noten, Julian Klausner amplified his signature print-mixing by anchoring outfits with wild, sequined, and crystallized shoes. Meanwhile, prim, ladylike pumps are being recast with tactile, impish finishes across the board.

A Wearable Mood Booster
New York-based fashion consultant Sophie Cohen sees this trend as a direct response to the current cultural climate. “We are seeing more fun and color in fashion in general lately, and shoes are the perfect entry point to that,” she says.

According to Cohen, investing in extreme footwear allows consumers to participate in avant-garde fashion without feeling overwhelmed by an outrageous outfit.
“I just think shoes spark joy,” Cohen adds, noting that in an era dominated by cultural chaos and climate anxiety, a simple mood booster is exactly what the industry demands.
