July brings warmer weather to Wales, but it also triggers a spike in rodent activity. Longer evenings mean doors and windows stay open, while leftover BBQ scraps and overflowing bins create an easy buffet for pests.

To stop an infestation before it starts, a pest controller operating in the Bridgend area is urging homeowners to perform a quick exterior check. The routine takes just five minutes and focuses on identifying structural vulnerabilities.
An expert from Triumph Pest Control shared practical advice in a recent video, warning residents not to wait for winter. “Be proactive about preventing rats getting into your attic space, or anywhere into your property,” he advised. “Believe it or not, now is the time – summertime – to be proactive.”
Homeowners need to inspect their exterior walls closely. Rodents can breach properties through gaps that seem impossibly small.
“Go around the outside of your property, check for any gaps or holes where rats can get through the tiniest of gaps,” the expert noted. He specifically highlighted checking around electrical boxes and broken plastic vents.
The exterior sweep should also include areas obscured by foliage or clutter. “If you’ve got any bushes up against the wall – you know, places where rats will get in,” he continued. Old vent pipes or discarded appliances like washing machines often serve as staging areas for rats.
“Any gaps – have a look around. Walk around. Have a five minute walk-around and then you can get repairs done. That’s being proactive,” he stated.
How to Seal Your Home
Once you identify vulnerable spots, prompt repairs are essential. Common and highly effective materials for sealing entry points include cement, caulk, hardware cloth, and steel wool.

Property owners should research which specific material fits their repair needs best. External vents must be securely covered, and any gaps around doorways smaller than 5mm should be sealed immediately.
Because rats are expert climbers, vertical access points require equal attention. Trim back any overhanging tree branches that make contact with your roof or guttering.
