A nationwide recall is underway across Canada for jars of garlic powder sold at discount retail giant Dollarama.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a public alert on July 15 targeting 70-gram containers of Heavenly Spices brand garlic powder. Officials warned the seasoning may be contaminated with Bacillus cereus bacteria.

The Bacterial Threat
The CFIA delivered a straightforward directive to consumers and retailers holding the seasoning. “Do not use, sell, serve or distribute the affected product,” the agency stated.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, Bacillus cereus triggers food poisoning characterized by stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. These unpleasant symptoms typically run their course within two days.
The pathogen frequently contaminates starchy items like rice, pasta, and potatoes, as well as dairy products, fish, and sauces. While lasting complications are rare, an untreated infection can spread beyond the digestive tract and impact major organs.
Recall Severity and Refunds
The CFIA classified this incident as a Class 2 recall. This specific designation indicates a moderate risk that consuming the contaminated powder could cause short-term, non-life-threatening health problems.
Consumers who purchased the 70-gram Heavenly Spices jars are urged to discard them immediately.
A spokesperson for the retailer told CTV News that shoppers affected by the recall can contact Dollarama directly to receive a $2.00 e-gift card as compensation.
