China Plans 250 km/h Underwater Bullet Train Across the Bohai Sea

China is advancing one of the world’s most ambitious infrastructure projects: an underwater bullet train. The rail line will connect two strategic cities across the sea, drastically cutting travel times for passengers and freight.

The high-speed rail network will cross the Bohai Sea, linking Dalian and Yantai in the country’s northeast. A journey that currently takes hours will soon be reduced to a matter of minutes.

The Bohai Strait Tunnel Project

The mega-project, officially known as the Bohai Strait Tunnel, will span approximately 123 kilometers. Trains traveling through the corridor will operate at speeds approaching 250 km/h.

Operating at this speed, the trip between Dalian and Yantai can be completed in exactly 40 minutes.

Currently, traveling between these two peninsulas requires lengthy detours over land or slow ferry rides. The primary goal of the tunnel is to accelerate mobility, slash logistics costs, and boost regional trade.

Engineering an Underwater Network

The engineering design features three parallel tunnels. Two galleries are dedicated to incoming and outgoing train traffic, while a third is reserved strictly for maintenance and emergency use.

The system will seamlessly integrate with China’s existing national railway network. This ensures uninterrupted travel between the terrestrial and underwater segments.

Engineers are tackling massive technical challenges, including waterproofing, deep-sea ventilation, and securing structural integrity in a geologically complex zone. To mitigate these risks, the project relies on advanced sensors, real-time monitoring systems, and highly specialized evacuation protocols.

Projected Timeline for 2035

While the announcement has sparked massive international interest, the underwater bullet train is not yet under construction. The project is actively moving through the planning and technical evaluation phases.

Current projections indicate the tunnel could begin operations by 2035. Once completed, it will become one of the most critical railway connections on the planet and a cornerstone of China’s logistical development.
