A Fiery Response to Garden Pests
One home gardener recently took extreme measures to save their vegetable crops from a devastating microscopic pest. Frustrated by root-knot nematodes invading their raised beds, the grower abandoned traditional remedies and literally set their soil on fire.
Rather than relying on a single pesticide or deterrent, the gardener launched a multi-step attack designed to completely sterilize the growing area. The strategy was shared on Reddit, where it quickly drew both fascination and intense criticism from fellow growers.
“I’m going for full eradication,” the gardener stated flatly.
The Eradication Strategy
The aggressive treatment targeted root-knot nematodes, which attack plant roots underground and cause severe damage that often goes unnoticed until crops begin to fail. To fight back, the gardener dug out the contaminated soil surrounding each affected plant.
Next, they sanitized the irrigation drip lines using hydrogen peroxide. Finally, they filled the empty spaces with hardwood lump charcoal and set it ablaze, allowing the surrounding dirt to bake in the intense heat.

To verify if the extreme heat worked, the gardener plans to spray additional hydrogen peroxide between the burn sites and plant determinate tomatoes for a fall harvest. If the nematodes survive and infest the new crops, the next phase will involve planting a cover crop of French marigolds, followed by full solarization next season.
The Cost of “Lifeless Dirt”
The fiery approach alarmed many in the gardening community. While root-knot nematodes are notoriously difficult to eliminate, critics argued that turning the garden into scorched earth destroys the very foundation of a healthy harvest.
One commenter warned that creating “lifeless dirt isn’t really a good thing,” noting that beneficial microbes are essential to soil and plant health.
The original poster remained unfazed by the ecological damage. They described root-knot nematodes as “permanent and pretty difficult to get rid of,” arguing that wiping out the infestation took absolute priority.
“Removing rkn to me is way more important than temporary soil health,” they wrote. “My goal was to nuke the soil and then rebuild.”
Alternative Solutions
Experts generally recommend exhausting less destructive methods before attempting total soil sterilization. Many commenters suggested solarization—a process of covering the soil with clear plastic to trap summer heat and suppress pests—as a highly effective and simpler first step.
“Just solarize,” one user argued, while another called the charcoal method “waaay overkill.”
Cover crops also offer a natural defense. French marigolds have been proven to deter root-knot nematode populations, and other growers recommended planting mustard greens to naturally break the pest cycle without resorting to fire.
Ultimately, the scorched-earth strategy left many peers skeptical of the long-term payoff. As one commenter pointed out, “Have fun with this. It’s a lot of effort to largely not solve the problem.”
