Linen is derived from the stalk of the flax plant. While flax is cultivated for multiple purposes, only the highest quality varieties are selected for textile production.
Inka Apter, director of material sustainability and product integrity at Eileen Fisher, notes that mechanical processing transforms these stalks into distinct textile threads. “These fibers are long, shiny, and naturally have small irregularities,” Apter explains. “It is exactly these imperfections that give linen its distinct texture and appearance.”
Patric Richardson, clothing care expert and host of The Laundry Guy, emphasizes that linen’s true beauty lies in this natural texture. He firmly believes the fabric’s signature creases should be embraced.
The Golden Rule of Washing Linen
How you wash your linen directly impacts its lifespan. Long wash cycles and aggressive detergents will break down the fibers and degrade the fabric prematurely.
The golden rule, according to Richardson, is straightforward: use a short wash cycle and a mild detergent. Interestingly, linen is actually stronger when wet than when dry. This means the fabric reaches its most durable state during the washing process.
Always wash linen in small loads to prevent excessive tangling and deep creasing. Apter recommends using a delicate or hand-wash setting with minimal spin.
While casual linen garments are safe to wash at home, highly structured items like blazers or lined trousers should be sent to an eco-friendly dry cleaner.
Machine and Hand Washing Guidelines
If you prefer using a washing machine, always start by separating whites, darks, and colors. Natural fibers can bleed color unexpectedly. Add a small amount of gentle detergent and select a quick or express cycle.
For hand washing, fill a large sink or basin with lukewarm water and a teaspoon of mild detergent. Submerge the garment entirely and let it soak for about 10 minutes.
Gently agitate the fabric in the water without scrubbing or pulling. Apter strongly warns against twisting or forcefully wringing the linen when removing it from the water. Instead, carefully press out the excess moisture.
Proper Drying Techniques
Skip the automated machine dryer whenever possible. Air drying yields vastly superior results and helps preserve the fabric’s structural integrity.
“If you let linen dry naturally, the result will be much better,” Richardson says. “Yes, it will be wrinkled, but that is exactly its charm. The dryer does not remove enough wrinkles to make it worth it.”
Lay the garments flat on a clean surface or hang them on padded hangers in the shade. Once dry, the fabric might feel slightly stiff initially. A light ironing or a quick pass with a garment steamer will soften the fibers and smooth out harsh creases.
If you absolutely must use a machine dryer, keep it strictly on a low-heat setting. Remove the clothes immediately while they are still slightly damp, and let them finish drying on a hanger.
Frequency and Maintenance
Linen is highly breathable and resists trapping bad odors. Because of this, you can simply air out garments between wears, significantly reducing how often you need to run them through a wash cycle.
Knitted linen items might lose their shape slightly after extended wear, but a standard wash and dry will easily restore their original fit. Treat random stains locally to avoid unnecessary full washes.
Never use bleach or harsh stain removers, as they will aggressively damage the delicate flax fibers. For the best long-term results, ensure your linen loads are washed completely separate from heavy fabrics like denim or towels.
