A Frantic Call for Help
A newly released recording of an emergency call is intensifying public scrutiny over the final hours of 18-year-old Nolan Wells. The Mississippi teen was found dead on July 6 after attending a Fourth of July party at Horn Island, a remote gathering spot off the Gulf Coast.

At around 4 p.m. on the day Wells vanished, someone on the boat his friends used to travel to the island placed a panicked call to Sea Tow, a private marine towing company. Released by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, the audio captures a chaotic and confusing scene unfolding hours before Wells was officially reported missing.
The young male caller told the dispatcher his group was stranded near the west tip of the island because their bilge pump had failed. “Can y’all please come?” the caller begged, noting that the boat was taking on water and “going down.”
Canceled Rescue and Viral Rumors
During the call, the dispatcher asked if everyone was on board and in good health. “Yeah, yeah, everyone is on board,” the caller replied. He estimated there were about seven passengers—none over the age of 21—and requested a tow to a Fort Bayou launch.

Shortly after, the rescue captain spoke with the dispatcher, revealing he had contacted the caller’s grandfather, the presumed owner of the boat. The grandfather reportedly canceled the tow, stating the teenagers had figured it out and no longer needed emergency help.
The dispatcher noted the original caller sounded deeply upset and panicked, remarking, “I get it, he’s a kid, he just doesn’t understand.”
While the towing call aligns with previous claims from Wells’ friends that they left Horn Island due to boat trouble, the raw audio has sparked viral speculation. Internet sleuths claim they can hear someone in the background of the recording saying Wells’ name, followed by phrases like “oh my God.”
Clashing Timelines
The background audio rumors directly challenge the narrative offered by Warren Hudson, a friend who was on the trip. In an interview with conservative commentator Brandon Tatum, Hudson stated he last saw Wells about an hour before the group abandoned the island.

According to Hudson, the group arrived that morning on three separate boats. He claimed Wells had been drinking but seemed completely fine. Hudson alleged that Wells chose to stay behind on the island with a young woman he had just met, ignoring a friend’s attempts to persuade him to leave with them.

Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, have aggressively questioned this story. They insist it was entirely out of character for their son to abandon his group, especially since he did not have his phone. Hudson and another friend, Tracestin Shepherd, told authorities that Wells intentionally left his phone on the boat to avoid losing it in the ocean.
The Independent Autopsy
Authorities discovered Wells on the morning of July 6. His body was lying face-down on the northwest tip of Horn Island, still dressed in his swim trunks.
Mississippi officials initially suspected drowning, citing the dangerous rip currents in the area, and stated there were no obvious signs of foul play. Wells’ family criticized this as a rush to judgment, bringing in civil rights attorney Ben Crump to spearhead an independent investigation.

Crump recently released preliminary results from an independent autopsy, labeling the teen’s cause and manner of death as “undetermined.” The examination found no deep tissue injuries or fractures, though it noted an “inconclusive” red discoloration on the back of the skull that warrants further review.
The official state autopsy results have not yet been released. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter confirmed that Wells’ friends are cooperating with law enforcement as the probe continues.
District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath addressed the mounting public pressure, stating her office will complete the investigation “thoroughly, carefully, without compromise, supported by the evidence and worthy of the confidence of the people we serve.”
