The Upside-Down Bottle Cap Trick

Building an impassable wall against slugs requires just two inexpensive items: double-sided tape and metal bottle caps. You can save caps from empty beer bottles at home, or ask a local pub if you can take their discarded caps for free.
To build the barrier, apply a strip of double-sided tape around the outer edges of your garden bed or plant pot.
Next, press the bottle caps upside down onto the tape to create a continuous border. The sharp, jagged edges of the inverted caps act as a miniature fence that slugs physically cannot crawl over.
Other Proven Natural Deterrents
Chemical fertilizers and lethal traps often cause more harm than good in a backyard garden. Fortunately, several ordinary household items effectively keep slugs at bay without damaging the soil.
- Coffee Grounds: Slugs are repelled by caffeine and bitter compounds. Sprinkle used coffee grounds directly onto the soil around vulnerable plants to stop them in their tracks.
- Textured Barriers: Soft-bodied pests hate crawling over rough materials. Surround your garden beds with thick rings of sawdust, bark mulch, or raw wool.
- Copper Tape: Wrap a continuous strip of copper tape around the rims of your pots or raised beds. Slugs cannot maintain their grip on the metal and will quickly turn back.
