“To best serve birds, it’s ideal to have a layered landscape of locally native plants including an overstory, understory, shrubs, perennials, and groundcover,” says Howard, author of Plant This, Not That: Over 200 Native Plant Swaps for a More Sustainable, Pollinator-Friendly Garden.
A complete landscape structure starts with an overstory of tall trees. The understory fills in the mid-level with smaller trees, bushes, and ground covers. Finally, perennials weave color and texture throughout the space.
To identify the best species for your region, Howard suggests using the National Wildlife Federation’s Native Plant Finder. Combining these regional plants with a clean water source and a few feeders guarantees top-tier bird-watching right outside your window.
The Canopy: Planting Native Trees

Trees do much more than provide nesting spots and shade. Howard emphasizes that specific native trees act as crucial food sources, particularly during the breeding season.
“In the spring, the number one plant for supporting the caterpillars that most birds need to sustain their young is an oak tree that’s native to your region,” Howard explains. Depending on your local climate, options might include white, live, water, or red oaks.
Spring-flowering trees also play a massive role in the ecosystem. They host caterpillars early in the year and yield vital berries during the colder fall and winter months.
Fruit-bearing trees are equally important for mature birds. Howard specifically points to the American plum, a widely native tree whose fruit helps adult bird populations thrive.
The Mid-Level: Low-Maintenance Shrubs
