Argentina’s primary health regulator has issued an immediate nationwide ban on multiple brands of water filters. The National Administration of Drugs, Foods and Medical Technology (ANMAT) declared the products illegal due to severe registration irregularities.
Through Provision 4668/2025, published in the country’s Official Gazette, the agency warned that the manufacturing conditions of these devices are completely unknown.
The control agency detected that it was a product without official registration.
Which Water Filters Are Banned?
ANMAT targeted a range of water purification devices heavily marketed on e-commerce platforms and official company websites. Authorities found no matching identification data on the product labels to verify their origins.
The ban covers several specific components, mostly imported from Taiwan and labeled in English. The prohibited items include:
- Viscarb and Lijing Viscarb Co. Ltd. granular activated carbon filters (1 and 5 µm).
- Clean Pure (Swun Yuan / Swun Chyan Enterprises) inline coconut activated carbon and sediment reduction filters.
- Water Saving activated carbon block filters (5 µm), marketed as “suitable for network or well water.”
- Various unbranded plastic housings for under-counter and over-counter water dispensers.
Unregulated Equipment Poses Serious Risks
Health officials launched the investigation after receiving a formal complaint regarding the unauthorized online sale of these purifiers and reverse osmosis systems. Upon inspection, ANMAT discovered the products lacked mandatory sanitary clearance.
The regulatory body stated these devices “represent a serious risk to the health of the population.”
Because the filters are unregistered, authorities cannot determine their formulation, the materials used, or if the manufacturers comply with essential health standards. Assessors noted that the supply chain data declared in invoices could not be traced back to the actual manufacturing inputs.
Immediate Recall and Consumer Directives
To prevent potential public health incidents, ANMAT has completely prohibited the use, sale, and distribution of all lots of the implicated devices.
The agency also ordered the responsible firms to execute an immediate market recall to pull the equipment from store shelves and online marketplaces.
ANMAT reported that the filter could cause health problems.
For individuals, pharmacies, or businesses currently in possession of these filters, ANMAT issued strict directives:
- Verify your equipment against the list of banned brands.
- Immediately suspend the use of the affected filters.
- Halt any ongoing distribution or commercialization.
Consumers who spot the illegal items for sale are urged to contact health authorities. Reports can be submitted through the national “ANMAT Responde” portal or by emailing [email protected].
Officials advise individuals reporting the products to include clear photographs of the specific labels to assist with ongoing enforcement actions.
