1. Citronella

Daniel Steward, managing director at Shield Pest Control, highlights its chemical makeup. “It contains compounds such as citronellal, geraniol, and citronellol, which help to mask the scents mosquitoes use to locate people,” he explains.
Steward notes that citronella works best in calm weather, as heavy winds will scatter the protective scent barrier.

3. Lemon Eucalyptus

“Lavender contains linalool and linalool oxide, both of which are natural insect repellents,” says Latifi. “Mosquitoes find the scent deeply unpleasant and will avoid areas where it is concentrated.”

5. Peppermint

“Peppermint contains the strong-smelling compounds menthol and menthone, which can interfere with mosquitoes’ ability to locate people,” explains Steward.
Because essential oils evaporate quickly, peppermint sprays require regular reapplication to maintain their invisible shield on skin or camping equipment.
