Jenitar Sau Na’amoana and her husband Jortham already had four children ranging from 1 to 10 years old. The 34-year-old Australian mother had no plans to expand her family.

Those plans changed drastically when doctors discovered she had naturally conceived identical quadruplet girls.

A Rare Medical Phenomenon

The four girls shared a single placenta after splitting from one fertilized egg. Medical experts describe this as an exceptionally rare event, known clinically as a monozygotic quadruplet pregnancy.

Dr. Alexa Bendall, an obstetrician and maternal fetal medicine specialist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, places the odds of such a natural conception at roughly one in 15 million.

“We don’t think it’s ever happened in Australia,” Bendall said in a hospital interview. “The fact that we’ve got four beautiful healthy babies born at 28 weeks and four days is incredible.”

A High-Risk Delivery

Due to the extreme complexity of carrying four babies in a single placenta, doctors classified the pregnancy as high-risk. Na’amoana checked into the hospital at 25 weeks for constant fetal monitoring.

On July 14, a surgical team successfully delivered the four girls via Cesarean section. The parents named the newborns Emily, Harriet, Catherine, and Alexa. The final name serves as a direct tribute to Dr. Bendall.

The newborns are currently thriving in a specialized neonatal intensive care unit. They will remain there under constant medical supervision until they grow to full term.

A Mother’s Relief

Na’amoana took to social media to express her profound gratitude, calling the birth “one giant miracle.” She shared an intimate photo of a tiny baby’s hand wrapped tightly around her finger.

“Every day our miracle babies grow stronger is another answered prayer,” she wrote. “We love you more than words can ever say, my miracle babies.”

Dr. Bendall echoed the family’s emotional sentiment. “From a human perspective, to be able to be part of the family’s journey and come out with four beautiful babies and a healthy mum is very precious,” she stated.

The Science Behind the Birth

While in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other artificial reproductive techniques have increased the overall rate of multiple births, naturally conceived quadruplets remain a statistical anomaly. A similar high-profile case occurred in Texas in 2020.

Dr. Shireen Meher, a maternal fetal medicine professor at the University of Sydney who was not directly involved in the case, emphasized the clinical importance of the birth. She noted that tracking such rare pregnancies provides crucial data that improves medical protocols for future mothers facing high-risk multiple births.

“Seeing a pregnancy like this through and having four babies that survive and do well, I think we all give ourselves a pat on the back,” Meher said. “We’re overjoyed for the family and that they are able to take healthy babies home, because we know everything that can potentially go wrong.”
