Millions of people rely on a morning cup of coffee to jumpstart their day. This daily routine generates a massive volume of used coffee grounds, most of which are improperly discarded and left to decay in landfills.
A team of scientists in Australia has discovered a practical second life for this morning waste. Researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne successfully developed a method to transform leftover coffee into a heavy-duty construction material.
Baking Grounds Into Biochar
Adding raw coffee waste directly to building materials does not work. The natural decomposition of organic molecules ultimately weakens standard concrete.
To solve this structural flaw, the engineers used a process called pyrolysis. The team heated the coffee waste to 350 degrees Celsius (662 degrees Fahrenheit) to carbonize the oxygen and break down the problematic organic matter.
This intense heat turns the grounds into biochar—a porous, carbon-rich charcoal. The biochar easily creates strong chemical bonds with the cement matrix. When mixed into concrete, it increases the material’s overall strength by 30 percent.
Keeping Waste Out of Landfills
The RMIT University study was published in late 2024 in the Journal of Cleaner Production. Engineer Shannon Kilmartin-Lynch told Science Alert that the project is driven by a need to establish a sustainable life cycle for everyday materials.
The research is currently in its early stages. The engineering team is now testing the biochar concrete’s long-term durability and structural resistance under various conditions.
“These exciting findings offer an innovative way to greatly reduce the amount of organic waste that goes to landfill,” Kilmartin-Lynch said.
