Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Confront the Reality of Empty Nesting

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck discussing their evolving family lives

A New Chapter for the Hollywood Veterans

Matt Damon is navigating a major life transition, and he is doing it alongside his best friend of 45 years, Ben Affleck.

The Oscar-winning duo is slowly entering the empty nester phase. According to Damon, the experience has left the longtime business partners surprisingly emotional.

In a recent interview with People, Damon revealed that he and Affleck frequently reflect on how fast their children are growing up.

“We’re at very similar stages with the kids, and it’s definitely a new phase of life,” Damon said.

Parallel Family Timelines

Damon, 55, shares four daughters with his wife, Luciana Barroso: Alexia, 27, Isabella, 20, Gia, 17, and Stella, 15. Two of his children have already moved out of the family home.

Affleck, 53, is experiencing a similar shift. He shares three children with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner: Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13.

The two actors have been inseparable throughout their careers. They won an Academy Award together for Good Will Hunting in 1998 and launched their joint production company, Artists Equity, in 2022.

Today, their private conversations have shifted away from scripts and box office returns. Instead, they focus on the bittersweet reality of fatherhood and impending empty houses.

The Battle for Presence

Damon admits that watching his daughters reach adulthood is a tough reality to accept. His primary strategy for coping is active presence.

“I feel like we are facing it and embracing the fact that it’s happening,” Damon told People. “We’ve been talking a lot about presence and really trying to be in the moment.”

He views mindfulness as a parent’s only effective defense against the rapid passage of time.

“Because you can’t slow time down, the only way to really do it is to really be there and be in it,” he noted.

A Wake-Up Call at the Dinner Table

To keep the family grounded amid busy schedules, Damon and Barroso enforce a strict household rule: nightly family dinner is mandatory.

“We have family dinner every night, and that’s non-negotiable, and it’s always been that way,” Damon stated.

However, the actor recently realized that physical presence doesn’t automatically guarantee connection.

“One of my daughters said, ‘Well, family dinner, last night we didn’t talk,'” Damon recalled.

The blunt observation caught him off guard and forced him to reevaluate the tradition.

“We realized, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re right,'” he said. “You can get lost in that routine a little bit and not appreciate why you established the routine in the first place.”

Balancing Hollywood and Home

Even as they navigate these family milestones, neither actor is slowing down professionally.

Damon is currently promoting Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, while Affleck manages a slate of projects in active development.

Despite their packed production schedules, both men remain focused on a singular personal goal: soaking up the final years before their children officially leave the nest.
