Dave Bautista is currently in negotiations to star as Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming God of War television series. The move comes just over two weeks after Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television confirmed a major recast for the lead role. Original star Ryan Hurst suffered a torn bicep while performing an on-set stunt, forcing him to step away from the project.
A Costly Injury Halts Production
Filming for the highly anticipated adaptation was already well underway before Hurst’s injury. The crew had reportedly finished shooting four of the first season’s ten episodes.
Studio executives ultimately decided to recast the role because Hurst’s recovery timeline was simply too long to keep production paused. The setback is especially brutal for Hurst, who packed on 40 pounds of muscle to play the Greek god. The actor is no stranger to the franchise, having previously voiced Thor in the 2022 video game God of War Ragnarök.
Bautista Steps Up

Variety first reported the talks with Bautista, a name frequently championed by fans for the live-action role. Before Hurst initially landed the part, Christopher Judge—the actor who voiced Kratos in both the 2018 and 2022 video games—was highly vocal about wanting to play the character on screen.
If the deal closes, Bautista brings both the imposing physical presence and the dramatic range required to play the notoriously stoic god.
The Journey Ahead
The live-action series adapts Santa Monica Studios’ acclaimed 2018 God of War reboot and its sequel, Ragnarök. The story follows Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they journey through the nine realms of Norse mythology to spread the ashes of Kratos’s late wife, Faye.
Prime Video plans to resume production this fall once a new lead is officially locked in. The series does not yet have a confirmed release window.
