US Parasite Outbreak Linked to Mexican Lettuce Plummets Taco Bell Foot Traffic

U.S. consumers are abandoning major restaurant chains and bypassing grocery store lettuce displays as a rapidly expanding parasitic outbreak sparks widespread food safety fears. Foot traffic data and industry insiders reveal a stark shift in consumer behavior driven by confusion over what is safe to consume.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently linked the outbreak of cyclosporiasis to iceberg lettuce sourced from Taylor Farms’ operations in central Mexico. The contaminated greens were served at Taco Bell locations before the fast-food chain pulled the affected products on July 17.

Tracking the Contamination

Despite Taylor Farms removing all potentially affected products from the market, cases of the disease—which causes explosive, watery diarrhea—continue to surge. People contract cyclosporiasis after consuming food or water contaminated with human feces containing the microscopic Cyclospora parasite.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases in the U.S., alongside more than 11,500 suspected cases. The localized impact is severe; on Tuesday, health officials in Michigan reported 9,680 cases, an increase of 427 from just a day earlier.

Public health investigators are now hunting for additional infection sources. In North Carolina, the state health department identified parsley and cilantro as common ingredients consumed by those who fell ill, suggesting multiple points of exposure.

Taco Bell Takes a Direct Hit

The uncertainty is bruising the restaurant sector. Foot traffic at Taco Bell, owned by Yum Brands, has declined every day since July 13.

According to analytics firm Placer.ai, Taco Bell visits plunged by 20.8% on Thursday, July 23, when compared to the chain’s Thursday average between January 1 and July 6. A representative from Placer.ai noted that while the worst may be over, chains associated with the outbreak are still struggling to recover their customer base.

Chipotle declined to comment on the broader traffic decline, while Taco Bell, Chopt, and Panera Bread did not immediately respond to industry inquiries.

Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb stated on Monday that some major retailers and restaurant brands have completely stopped sourcing produce from the implicated region in central Mexico due to fears of widespread contamination.

Supermarket Produce Sales Slump

The panic has heavily bled into grocery retail. U.S. unit sales for fresh lettuce dropped 9% in the week ending July 18 compared to the previous week, and plummeted 19% compared to two weeks prior, according to data from market research firm NielsenIQ.

“The entire fresh produce category at retail is down,” said Paul Sellew, CEO and founder of Little Leaf Farms, an eastern U.S. lettuce grower. “The consumer has been motivated by fear.”

Sellew noted that his company’s sales have dropped by double digits despite their indoor growing methods. Little Leaf Farms uses greenhouses supplied with potable water and rainwater that undergoes ultraviolet disinfection, utilizing automation to ensure humans never touch the greens.

“How we grow is so fundamentally different that there’s no way that these issues could affect our product,” Sellew emphasized. “Not all leafy greens are created equal.”

Navigating the Produce Aisle

Medical experts are cautioning against a total boycott of leafy greens. Dr. Tyler Evans, CEO of the Wellness Equity Alliance and a former New York City chief medical officer, advised that healthy adults outside of heavily impacted states like Michigan can continue eating greens.

“If this were some recall on candy or licorice, I’d say just don’t eat it,” Evans said. “But the nutritional benefit of leafy greens is significant, so we don’t want to tell people to avoid it at all costs.”
