A Historic $83 Billion Gold Strike

Geologists have unearthed one of the most important findings in modern mineral exploration. A gigantic pure gold deposit containing hundreds of tons of precious metal has been located entirely within one nation’s borders.

The discovery took place in central China’s Hunan province. Exploration teams identified the massive gold deposit within the Wangu gold field in Pingjiang county.

These highly lucrative veins are buried at extreme depths. The gold sits between 2,000 and 3,000 meters beneath the earth’s surface.

High Concentrations Deep Underground

The Hunan Geological Bureau reported finding more than 40 individual gold veins at the site. The total reserves are valued at 600 billion yuan, which converts to a staggering $83 billion.

Initial drilling and exploration confirmed 300 tons of pure gold sitting directly at the 2,000-meter mark.

The quality of the find is exceptional. Several drilled rock cores revealed high concentrations, yielding up to 130 grams of gold per ton of extracted rock.

Advanced Tech Leads to the Discovery

This unprecedented discovery was made possible through cutting-edge, next-generation prospecting technologies. These advanced tools allowed geologists to pinpoint the deeply hidden auriferous veins with pinpoint precision.

According to the deputy director of the Hunan Geological Bureau, peripheral areas are already showing signs of further gold traces. This opens the door for expansive future mining investigations.

This massive pure gold deposit will significantly bolster China’s national reserves. It follows a notable 2023 discovery in Shandong province that secured a 50-ton stockpile of the mineral.

Bolstered by its aggressive and technologically advanced mining industry, China currently stands as the world’s largest gold producer.

The World’s Largest Gold Reserves

While the Hunan discovery is a massive victory for China, a few global sites still dominate the history of gold mining. Here are the world’s largest known gold deposits:

  • Muruntau Gold Mine (Navoi, Uzbekistan): An open-pit operation with estimated reserves exceeding 4,500 tons.
  • South Deep Gold Mine (Gauteng, South Africa): A deep underground mine holding approximately 1,000 to 1,200 tons.
  • Grasberg Mine (Central Papua, Indonesia): A copper-gold porphyry deposit with estimated resources of 2,500 tons of gold.
  • Olympiada Gold Mine (Krasnoyarsk, Russia): An open-pit site featuring refractory gold in sulfides, with reserves near 1,000 tons.
  • Pueblo Viejo Mine (Sánchez Ramírez, Dominican Republic): An epithermal gold and silver mine holding a total of 800 tons.
  • Carlin Trend (Nevada, USA): A microscopic gold deposit with historical accumulated resources surpassing 2,000 tons.
  • Boddington Gold Mine (Western Australia): An open-pit gold and copper deposit with reserves ranging from 600 to 700 tons.
