Hydrangeas are the undisputed focal point of summer gardens. Their massive, colorful blooms dominate outdoor spaces for months, provided they receive the right care.
Because these dense bushes produce such substantial flowers, they require active maintenance to survive warmer weather. However, expanding your floral display does not have to drain your wallet.
Best-selling author and gardening expert Simon Akeroyd recently shared a foolproof, four-step propagation method on TikTok. He proved that anyone can multiply their plants entirely for free during the summer.

The Four-Step Propagation Method
Start by inspecting an established, healthy hydrangea bush. You are looking for non-flowering shoots, which appear as leafy green branches with no blooms attached.
Once you locate a suitable branch, make a clean cut just below a bud at the base. Immediately strip away all the leaves from the bottom section of your new cutting.
Next, place the bare stem directly into a glass of water. Akeroyd points out that this plant family thrives on heavy hydration, noting that the prefix “hydra” literally translates to water.
Position the glass in a sunny spot, such as an indoor windowsill, and wait. Within two to six weeks, a fresh root system will emerge from the base of the shoot.

Planting for Long-Term Growth
Once the cuttings develop strong roots, transfer them into small pots filled with quality soil. If preferred, you can bypass pots and plant the rooted shoots directly into your garden beds.
Location is critical for long-term survival. According to Garden Tech, you should plant hydrangeas in a bright but sheltered area to protect them from harsh direct sunlight.
The optimal environment provides steady morning sun followed by afternoon shade. Ensure the soil remains moist and nutrient-rich to support the heavy seasonal blooms.
As the plants mature into dense bushes, they will deliver a striking burst of color from summer straight through autumn.
