An orphaned giraffe calf is beating the odds at Tanganyika Wildlife Park.
Delivered via an emergency C-section, the premature baby lost her mother to a fatal illness. Initially, caretakers were handed a bleak prognosis for the newborn.
Now, the calf is proving expectations wrong, drawing thousands of fans well beyond the Wichita area as she fights for survival.
Clearing Critical Hurdles
Park staff immediately went to work following the traumatic delivery. On Wednesday, the Tanganyika team delivered a highly encouraging update on her condition.
“I’m so excited to report that she’s passed all the milestones that we initially set for her,” said LynnLee Schmidt, Tanganyika Wildlife Park Integrator.
The young giraffe is now breathing independently. She is also actively standing up and lying down completely unassisted.
“We’re really hopeful and excited for the progress that she’s made so far,” Schmidt said.
Focusing on Nutrition and the Herd
With basic mobility and breathing stabilized, caretakers are shifting their attention to the unnamed calf’s digestion.
Gut health and specialized nutrition are the next critical steps. Schmidt emphasized that securing her diet is vital for the ultimate goal: introducing the baby to Tanganyika’s established giraffe herd.
Schmidt described the massive outpouring of public support since the birth as “amazing.”
