Entering a New Chapter

Matt Damon is confronting an unavoidable reality of fatherhood, and he is navigating it alongside his oldest friend, Ben Affleck. The two Oscar winners and longtime business partners are grappling with the bittersweet milestone of becoming empty nesters.

Damon recently told People that watching their children prepare to leave home has triggered a surprisingly emotional response from both actors. Friends for over four decades, the pair now frequently find themselves reflecting on the rapid passage of time.

“We’re at very similar stages with the kids, and it’s definitely a new phase of life,” Damon said.

A Shared Fatherhood Timeline

At 55, Damon shares four daughters—Alexia, 27, Isabella, 20, Gia, 17, and Stella, 15—with his wife, Luciana Barroso. Meanwhile, the 53-year-old Affleck shares Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13, with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner.

With two of Damon’s daughters having already moved out and Affleck’s eldest children reaching adulthood, the shifting family dynamics are impossible to ignore.

The two Hollywood stars have remained inseparable throughout much of their careers. They famously won an Academy Award together for Good Will Hunting in 1998 before reuniting decades later to launch the production company Artists Equity in 2022.

Today, however, their conversations focus less on film scripts and more on the complexities of parenting.

The Struggle to Stay Present

Damon admits the transition is difficult, but he is determined to actively appreciate the time he still has with his daughters under one roof.

“I feel like we are facing it and embracing the fact that it’s happening,” Damon explained. “We’ve been talking a lot about presence and really trying to be in the moment.”

He noted that slowing down the years is an unwinnable fight. “Because you can’t slow time down, the only way to really do it is to really be there and be in it,” he added.

The Mandatory Family Dinner

To combat the digital distractions of modern life, Damon and Barroso maintain one important household rule: family dinners.

“We have family dinner every night, and that’s non-negotiable, and it’s always been that way,” Damon said.

Yet, even strict routines have flaws. Damon recalled a recent reality check from one of his daughters, who pointed out that everyone was physically at the table but mentally absent.

“One of my daughters said, ‘Well, family dinner, last night we didn’t talk,'” Damon remembered.

“We realized, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re right,'” he admitted. “You can get lost in that routine a little bit and not appreciate why you established the routine in the first place.”

A Friendship Tempered by Fatherhood

A 45-year friendship has seen Damon and Affleck through massive career shifts, marriages, and global fame. Now, their bond provides crucial support as they hit identical parenting milestones.

Despite their demanding schedules—Damon is currently promoting Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey, while Affleck manages a slate of upcoming projects—family remains the absolute priority.

As the two actors prepare to send the rest of their children into the world, they are united in a single objective: to stay present before the nest empties completely.
