The 20-Minute Denim Transformation
Throwing away old jeans is a waste of durable, high-quality fabric. With a basic sewing machine and a spare 20 minutes, unused denim can easily become a practical, everyday bag.
This beginner-friendly project requires minimal sewing experience. It bypasses complex patterns, relying instead on simple, straight seams to build a stylish accessory rapidly.
Essential Materials
You only need a few core items to complete this upcycling project.
- One pair of old jeans
- 1/8-inch (3 mm) craft felt
- Fabric scissors
- Heavy-duty sewing machine needle (size 90/14 or 100/16)
- Sturdy thread
Using craft felt is the secret to achieving a fast, professional result without complicated tailoring. The felt acts as a two-in-one material, providing a clean inner lining while giving the soft denim a rigid, upright structure.
Preparing the Fabric
Lay your jeans flat on a hard surface. Cut two equal-sized rectangles from the widest part of the pant legs.
These two pieces form the front and back panels of your bag. The size of the cuts will dictate the overall dimensions of your finished tote.
Next, unroll your craft felt. Cut two pieces of felt to the exact same dimensions as your denim panels.
Finally, cut two long, narrow strips from the remaining denim fabric to serve as the handles. A standard, comfortable handle size is about 3 inches wide and 20 inches long.
Constructing the Panels
Place one piece of felt flat on your workspace. Lay a denim panel directly on top, right side facing up, and repeat this for the second set.
Take your two prepared handle strips. Fold the long raw edges inward toward the center, then fold them in half again to hide all frayed edges.
Stitch down the open side of each strap to create sturdy handles. Pin the ends of these handles to the top edge of your front and back panels.
Sew a straight line across the top edge. This single seam secures the handles in place and attaches the felt lining to the denim simultaneously.
Final Assembly
Place your front and back panels together, with the denim right sides facing each other. The felt layers should be entirely on the outside.
Sew down the two sides and across the bottom edge, leaving the top open. Keep a half-inch seam allowance to ensure the bag can hold heavy items without tearing.
Reach into the open top and pull the fabric to turn the entire bag right-side out. The raw edges and seams are now entirely hidden inside, secured behind the structured felt layer.
Press the top edges flat with a hot iron to give the bag a crisp finish.
