The Smartphone Camera Test
Before taking anything apart, verify that your remote is actually failing to send a signal. Point the top of the remote at your smartphone’s camera.
Look at your phone screen while pressing the broken buttons. If the remote is working, you will see a faint purple or white flashing light from the infrared (IR) bulb.
If you see a light but the TV doesn’t respond, the issue is with your television’s receiver. If you see no light, it is time to fix the remote.
Eliminate Battery Corrosion
Dead batteries are the obvious culprit, but the real silent killer is battery leakage. Over time, batteries leave a thin, sometimes invisible layer of corrosion on the metal contact springs.
Remove the batteries and inspect the metal coils. If they look dull, white, or crusted, they cannot conduct electricity efficiently.
Dip a cotton swab in white vinegar or 90% isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Scrub the metal contacts vigorously until they shine, let them dry completely, and insert fresh batteries.
The Real Secret: Restoring Conductive Buttons
If only a few specific buttons—usually the power or volume keys—are unresponsive, the problem lies beneath the rubber keypad. The conductive coating on the back of those specific buttons simply wears off from repeated use.
To fix this, carefully pry open the plastic shell of the remote using a flathead screwdriver or a plastic guitar pick. Most remotes are held together by internal plastic clips and will snap apart into two halves.
Once open, separate the rubber keypad from the green circuit board. Wipe the circuit board gently with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to remove any sticky residue left behind by natural hand oils or spilled drinks.
The Aluminum Foil Trick
For the final step, you need to restore the lost conductivity on the worn-out rubber buttons. This simple trick is what saves you from buying a costly replacement remote.
- Cut a tiny piece of standard household aluminum foil, just large enough to cover the bottom of the problematic rubber button.
- Apply a microscopic drop of superglue to the back of the rubber button pad.
- Use tweezers to place the foil against the glue.
- Press firmly and let it dry completely.
The foil now acts as a perfect electrical conductor. When you press the button, the foil bridges the gap on the circuit board, triggering the command instantly.
Reassembly
Once the glue is dry and the circuit board is clean, line up the rubber keypad with the plastic housing. Snap the top and bottom shells back together firmly.
Insert your batteries and test it on the TV. Those previously dead buttons will now register with a light tap, extending the life of your factory remote indefinitely.
