Kotobukiya Transforms the Iconic '90s Furby into an Anime 'Bishoujo' Statue

In 1998, Hasbro unleashed the Furby on an unsuspecting public. The electronic creature babbled in its native “Furbish” and boasted a “mind of its own,” quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon.

Now, decades after its debut, the infamous ’90s toy is getting a radical anime-inspired redesign. Kotobukiya recently announced “Pretty Girl Furby,” the latest addition to its popular “Bishoujo” statue collection.

A Fluffy, High-Fashion Makeover

According to the PR Times, the Bishoujo line specializes in transforming popular non-human characters into highly stylized humanoid figures. “Pretty Girl Furby” fully embraces this concept with a striking gray, pink, and yellow color palette.

Standing at 225mm (8.8 inches) tall, the figure channels the original first-generation Furby aesthetic. She wears a furry fashion overcoat designed to mimic the toy’s fuzzy texture, complete with a classic Furby face adorning the back.

Kotobukiya packed the statue with nostalgic details. The character wears removable white-rimmed sunglasses featuring a tiny replica of Furby’s iconic black light sensor right on the bridge.

To finish the look, the figure sports a Furby logo belt buckle and bright yellow stiletto boots. The footwear perfectly matches the distinctive plastic feet of the original 1998 toy.

Miniature Furby and Interactive Features

Buyers aren’t just getting the anime gal. The Bishoujo release includes a themed display stand and a 70mm (2.7 inches) classic gray-and-pink Furby mini-figure.

Both figures offer interactive display options. Collectors can manually open or close the eyes on the anime statue and her robotic companion, creating multiple facial expressions for display alongside other Kotobukiya collectibles.

A Toy With a Notorious Reputation

The original Furby was engineered as an evolving companion that slowly learned English the more kids played with it. Equipped with light and motion sensors, the toy was undeniably innovative for its time.

However, those same sensors gave Furby a creepy reputation. The toy had an infamous tendency to randomly “awaken” and start speaking in pitch-black rooms during the middle of the night.

This unsettling glitch cemented Furby’s legacy in pop culture, making it a frequent punchline in parodies like The Simpsons and Robot Chicken.

Despite the jokes, Hasbro has successfully maintained the brand. The toy celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2023 with the launch of its fifth technological generation.

Preorders and Launch Dates

Kotobukiya scheduled the Japanese release of “Pretty Girl Furby” for March 2027. Fans can currently preorder the set through Kotobukiya’s Japanese storefront for 25,300 yen (roughly $155.78 USD).

The figure is also available via AmiAmi, a major Japanese hobby retailer that offers worldwide shipping.

North American collectors can secure their orders through the Kotobukiya USA website, though the price bumps up to $179.99 USD. The official stateside release is slated for April 2027.
