Cuban actress Aylín Mujica was in Colombia filming the culinary reality series Top Chef VIP when she received a phone call that brought her world to a standstill.

Her 31-year-old son, Mauro Menéndez, had died unexpectedly. Known professionally as DJ MAAHEZ, the young music producer passed away while traveling in Barbados.

Mujica immediately stepped away from television production to reunite with her grieving family. The sudden loss has sent shockwaves through the Latin entertainment community.

A Mother’s Devastation

Just 48 hours before the tragedy, Mujica had posted a photo of herself in a chef’s apron, eager to start the new television project.

“Taking each step with my heart leading the way,” she wrote to her followers. “I’m so happy to begin this new journey with all my energy, all my determination and my whole truth. Here we go.”

Following the news of her son’s death, she retreated from the public eye. However, Mujica briefly broke her silence by responding to an Instagram post from Telemundo’s news program Al Rojo Vivo.

“Thank you so much, family. All I can say is that I’m devastated,” she wrote, appending a broken-heart emoji to the brief statement.

Unanswered Questions in Barbados

The exact circumstances surrounding Mauro’s death remain unconfirmed by local authorities.

According to multiple regional media reports, the 31-year-old was visiting Barbados to attend a sporting event. Reports indicate he had been battling pneumonia for several days and may have suffered a fatal heart attack linked to the illness.

His condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly and without warning, leaving his inner circle stunned.

A Father’s Heartbreak

Osamu Menéndez, Mauro’s father and Mujica’s former husband, confirmed the loss on July 17 via social media.

“Please forgive me; I can’t speak. My son Mauro died last night, and I’m devastated,” the musician wrote. “I’m on a plane to bring his body home.”

Osamu shared a series of photographs highlighting his son’s life and passion for music. “I love you all, always, and I’m grateful for your messages of condolence,” he added.

The Legacy of DJ MAAHEZ

Under the stage name MAAHEZ, Mauro built a solid reputation in the electronic music scene.

He frequently performed at festivals, clubs, and high-profile events across Miami, the Caribbean, and the broader United States. Peers described him as a deeply dedicated artist whose career was steadily gaining international momentum.

For Mujica, Mauro was a central pillar in a tightly-knit family. Despite a demanding, travel-heavy acting career, she frequently spoke in interviews about prioritizing her children and described motherhood as the absolute foundation of her life.
