Matt Damon as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey
The Odyssey is dominating theaters worldwide. Christopher Nolan’s star-studded adaptation of Homer’s epic poem is projected to pull in $120.5 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend.
Boasting a 95% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film notoriously sold out IMAX 70mm screenings a full year in advance. The massive draw stems from a powerhouse cast featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Tom Holland as Telemachus.
The supporting roster is equally heavy, with Zendaya playing Athena, Elliot Page as Sinon, Charlize Theron as Calypso, and Samantha Morton as Circe. Lupita Nyong’o also tackles a dual role as Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra.
Shattering Five Box Office Records
According to Deadline, 2026’s The Odyssey is rewriting the record books on five distinct fronts. First, it marks the biggest domestic debut ever for a Matt Damon-led film.
The previous record belonged to 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum at $69.2 million. Even adjusted for inflation to $111.15 million, Nolan’s R-rated epic easily edges it out.
Second, this is Nolan’s highest-grossing opening for a non-Batman project. It clears Oppenheimer ($82.4 million) and sits behind only The Dark Knight ($158.4 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($160.8 million).
Dominating Universal and 2026 Metrics
The film is also securing the best live-action domestic debut of 2026 so far. It ranks third overall for the year, trailing only animated giants The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131.7 million) and Toy Story 5 ($159.6 million).
Furthermore, it effortlessly claims the highest R-rated domestic debut year-to-date. This puts it far ahead of A24’s highest-grossing horror hit, Backrooms ($81.4 million).
Finally, it sets a new all-time high for Universal Pictures. The debut shatters the studio’s previous R-rated record set by the romance phenomenon Fifty Shades of Grey ($85.1 million).
The Billion-Dollar Horizon
With $120.5 million already banked, the movie has surpassed the lifetime domestic runs of all but twelve films released in 2026. It rapidly eclipsed prominent titles like Disclosure Day ($113.2 million), Wuthering Heights ($84 million), and Mortal Kombat II ($79.7 million).
Other films left in its wake include The Sheep Detectives ($66.1 million), Send Help ($64.7 million), Reminders of Him ($48.5 million), The Drama ($48.1 million), and Lee Cronin’s The Mummy ($29.1 million).
Nolan’s latest project requires this incredible momentum to turn a profit. The reported budget of The Odyssey sits at a staggering $250 million, pushing its break-even point to an estimated $625 million.
Only nine movies achieved that global milestone in 2025, but The Odyssey appears primed to join the billion-dollar club. Riding a 97% Popcornmeter score—Nolan’s highest audience rating ever—the epic is built to outpace the $975.8 million global run of Oppenheimer.
