Celebrating From Afar
Eric Roberts was notably absent when his daughter, Emma Roberts, tied the knot with Cody John.
Despite missing the July 25 ceremony, the 70-year-old Oscar-nominated actor offered his blessing from a distance.
“I love my daughter, always have, always will,” the “Runaway Train” star told Page Six on July 27.
He added that he supports her choices, noting, “It is perfectly wonderful for her to celebrate however she wants, with whomever she wants.”
When contacted by USA TODAY, a representative for Eric directed reporters to his comments in the Page Six report.
Emma and Cody John married at a private residence in Idaho, according to Vogue. The couple publicly announced their engagement in July 2024 after dating for nearly two years.
A Complicated Family History
The distance between the father and daughter is not a sudden development.
Eric has previously acknowledged a “loss of relationship” with 35-year-old Emma. He also disclosed that she specifically asked him to stop speaking about her in public.
In his 2024 memoir, “Runaway Train: Or, The Story of My Life So Far,” Eric confronted his past behaviors.
He framed the book as a “public apology” to his sister, Julia Roberts, and his late half-sister, Nancy Motes.
Eric admitted his severe drug addiction made him “dangerous to be around” during Emma’s childhood.
He called losing custody of Emma the “biggest consequence” of his substance abuse.
During the ensuing custody battle, Julia Roberts supported Emma’s mother, Kim Cunningham. Eric has since conceded that his sister made the right decision.
“I imagine I will remain as Julia’s brother and Emma Roberts’ dad for the rest of my life,” he wrote in his memoir.
“I’d like to make good on that, to move aside proudly and with grace. That’s part of the reason for writing the book.”
